This past week, after the observance of the Baptism of the Lord, we moved into the observance of Ordinary Time. Our contemporary understanding of the word “ordinary” skews the meaning for us. The Latin translated for us as “ordinary time”, literally means, “time through the year”. It’s a way to identify the time that connects all the various observances throughout the Church year.
It’s intended to be a time of spiritual growth; therefore, the liturgical color is green. The scripture readings during Ordinary time tend to focus upon the moral and doctrinal teachings of the faith as well as the day to day ministry of Jesus.
I want to encourage you to continue the increased devotion you may have engaged during Advent. If you haven’t picked up your Christmas book, Rediscovering the Saints, it would be a very good time to do so. It would be a great primer for Lent, which will be here in 5 weeks.
The Lord be with you. Fr. Sid.
