In our journey through the Mass, we have celebrated the consecration of the bread and wine. It is now the Body and Blood of Christ. Christ Jesus in now present on our altar. This is a very holy moment and should command all of our attention. The next action of the priest is to make the “acceptable offering” to God the Father, which is the Body and Blood of His Beloved Son. It is made present from the one time offering made on Calvary supernaturally made present via the Mass. We offer it now at that moment in time for our sin and the sin of the world. The priest will hold up the host and chalice saying, “Through Him, with Him and in Him, God Almighty Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are Yours for ever and ever.” To which we respond with the Great Amen! This is the holy moment at which we hook our offering of devotion, thanksgiving, praise, and devotion, (all of which is insufficient), along with our prayer intentions to the all-sufficient offering of the Son to the Father. (Our human offering is represented by the drop of water placed in the chalice with the wine prior to the consecration. The wine will become the offering of Christ.) This is immediately followed by the “Our Father.” I encourage you to reconsider this prayer in this context. We have just comingled our offering with the perfect offering of Jesus and “…we dare to say. Our Father…” We will talk of this more next week. Yours in Christ our Lord, Fr. Sid.
